Submissions

KOS Magazine opens for submissions from the 1st-10th every month!
We are looking for stories of change-makers. Who in your community is changing the world for the better?

We publish feature articles, Q&As, opinion, commentary, personal essays and reflective pieces. We also welcome work from photographers and artists.

At KOS Magazine, we regularly dip our toe in the more creative side with various campaigns. On these occasions, we publish poetry and more experimental work. You can see some of our previous campaigns here: moments; Forgotten Melbourne; Resilience

We do not publish content that uses academic jargon. We do not accept or condone material that marginalises members of under-represented groups in society. If you are writing from a perspective that is not your own or you are discussing an issue outside the realms of your personal experience, please ensure you have done your research. We do not accept misrepresentation in our pieces.

THEME

This month, we are currently accepting work under the theme Politics.

PUBLICATION

  1. Originality

    • Work must be previously unpublished. This includes all publications online or print, as well as any work that appears on personal blogs and social platforms.

  2. Word limit:

    • No more than 1200 words (unless discussed with our editorial team)

  3. Submissions:

    • If you are looking to write about an organisation or person (i.e. in feature article or Q&A format) we prefer you PITCH the idea to us first. This is so we can ensure the organisation aligns with KOS’ values.

    • If you are looking to write commentary, opinion, personal essay, or reflective piece, you are welcome to send the full submission to us.

    • For both pitches and submissions, please send us a word doc with the file name as: “Name – Title – Type of Submission”. E.g. Josie Smith – The Price of Pearls – Personal Essay

    • We also accept other artistic forms: visual art; music; photography. Usually, these will work in collaboration with a written piece. These forms can however, stand alone, provided there is enough content. E.g. a photo story; the combination of poetry and visual art.

  4. Payment:

  • Given that KOS Magazine is a volunteer-run organisation, at this stage we unfortunately cannot provide payment for written and artistic submissions. We hope to be able to do so in the future. We can provide you with a by-line and exposure in our newsletter and on our social media platforms.

PROCESS

As KOS Magazine is a volunteer-run organisation please allow time for our hard-working team to read your content. We aim to respond within two weeks of your submission.

We have a four-week turn-around process, meaning should your submission be successful, it would need to be ready a month after you have been accepted.
